The Biggest City in Yorkshire
Leeds is a Northern city in the West of Yorkshire, known for being a thriving city for students. As a student there, I find Leeds to have the perfect balance between city life and natural areas. There are plenty of bars and clubs for those who enjoy going out on the town. And lots of other activities such as a cat cafe, rock climbing, and fancy restaurants.
Itâs also situated close to the Yorkshire countryside. Walking a little bit out of the city can take you to Meanwood Valley trail. A beautiful woodland trail thatâs perfect for relaxing walks.
So letâs take a closer look at what makes Leeds a perfect student city.
High-Ranking University
Leeds boasts a variety of universities, some of which have well known reputations. The University of Leeds is among the top 15 universities in the UK, and in the top 100 in the world. (According to QS World University Rankings). It has an impressive student union and a huge amount of societies.
Leeds Beckett is also a much heard-of university. It made into the top 4% of the worldâs universities in 2016, and is well known for its sporting reputation.
Leeds is also home to several specialist universities. Including Leeds Arts University. Which is the only specialist Arts university in the North of England. The study-place of Henry Moore, it is the best in the country for Design & Crafts.
There is also Leeds College of Music, Leeds Trinity, and The University of Law. So youâre truly spoilt for academic choice!
Amazing Nightlife
For many students, nightlife will be an integral part of their university experience. According to Which?, Leeds is among the top 10 places for student nightlife. It is the home of the much beloved Otley Run, and a vast amount of clubs and bars. Students can rest assured that their nightâs out will always be wild.
If the stereotypical student night isnât your scene, donât worry! Leeds offers more than just drinking spots. You could visit Hyde Park Picture house, explore one of Leedsâ many galleries, or see a gig at the O2 Academy. Or, if youâre an animal lover, thereâs the massively popular cat cafe.
Low Living Costs
If youâre moving to Leeds to live as a student, youâre in luck! Leeds was reported to have one of the lowest student living costs in the UK. It made it into WhatUniâs top 10 most affordable student cities for 2019.
Travelling is cheap, too. You can walk or bike to most places in the city. Leeds Beckett also offers a student bike rental scheme. Buses are also frequent and you can get a student ticket for little over ÂŁ1.
Sometimes, we can bring more things with us than we can fit. This is where storage comes in handy. There are lots of self-storage centres in Leeds that can keep your items safe. Itâs a lot easier than trying to find room you donât have. And cheaper than taking leftover things back home.

There are also frequent events and attractions set up in Millennium Square. Meaning the centre is rarely boring. Itâs also home to LeedsFest, one of the most well-known music festivals in the UK.
